Item Quality is a color-coded system of all known item types in Torchlight. This system is used throughout the Torchlight series.

In Torchlight I

• Common (White): Common items usually have no enchantments.
• Enchanted (Green): Enchanted or Magic items have one or more random enchantments.
• Rare (Blue): Rare items have more random enchantments than green items.
• Unique (Gold/Orange): Unique items have fixed names and a number of powerful, fixed enchantments.  "Quest" Items are always unique.
• Set items (Purple): Set items are classified as either Rare or Unique, but the item's name is colored purple.

Sockets for Gems

• Items of all quality levels may contain one or two sockets for Gems. Sockets are more common on the less frequent items. Inserting gems into the items confers additional powers to the item.

Equip requirements

• Items that the player can not equip are shown with a red background.
• Enchanted items that a player can not equip are shown with a magenta background.

In Torchlight II

• Common (White):Common items have no enchantments. Enchanting will upgrade them to enchanted (green) quality.
• Enchanted (Green): Enchanted or Magic items have one or more random enchantments.
• Rare (Blue): Rare items have more random enchantments than green items. Some rare items belong to certain item sets. In this case, they still have random enchantments, but the set bonuses are fixed.
• Unique (Gold/Orange): Unique items have fixed names and a number of powerful, fixed enchantments. Some of them belongs to sets. Certain unique sets feature an additional class restriction.
• Legendary (Orange/Red): Legendary is the highest tier of equipment. These items are extremely rare, and many have unique compelling enchantments and properties. They are all weapons or shields.
• Quest (Purple): Quest items are used exclusively for quests. This includes items such as keys.

Sockets Available for Gems

• Armors can have at most two (2) sockets except for the unique items The Asphyx and Hands of Orlac in the Asphyx Set, each of which has five sockets, and Netherrealm Shield, which has four sockets.
• Weapons can have at most two (2) sockets with two sources of exceptions.
  1. Enchanted weapons (excluding shields) can come 3 sockets and Rare weapons (excluding shields) can come with 4 sockets. Those weapons usually have no other significant enchantments.
  2. Certain unique weapons come with more sockets. Notably, one-handed weapons in the Netherrealm series have four sockets and two-handed weapons in the series have five sockets.

Equip Requirements

Items generally have a Level requirement and Stats requirement. The player must meet either the Level OR ALL the Stats requirement to be able to use the item.

• Items that the player does not meet the requirements to equip are marked with a red X icon.
• Items that can not be equipped because they are unidentified are shown with a red background.(which can be automatically identified by the required character's level; you may meet the stats requirement even if the level of the weapon is high; as always, unique / gold quality items still require the use of an identify scroll.)
